Understanding Electrofusion Welding: A Complete Guide

What is Electrofusion Welding?

Electrofusion (EF) welding is a method of joining polyethylene (PE) pipes and fittings using embedded heating elements. The fitting contains a resistance wire that, when energised, melts the PE material of both the fitting and the pipe, creating a permanent, homogeneous joint.

Why Electrofusion?

Electrofusion is the preferred jointing method for gas distribution networks and is widely used in water supply systems because:

  • Creates a 100% leak-proof joint
  • Joint strength equals or exceeds the pipe itself
  • Suitable for all sizes from 20mm to 315mm
  • Can be performed in confined spaces
  • Barcode traceability ensures quality control
